Ford Transit Ignition Repair & Replacement in Portsmouth
A sticking ignition can stop a working van before the first job. Supported Ford Transit systems are assessed at the vehicle, with the blade, barrel and wider ignition mechanism considered separately.

Transit, Custom, Connect and Courier
The Transit name covers different vehicles and generations. Supported versions of Ford Transit, Transit Custom, Transit Connect and Transit Courier can be checked from the registration; the badge alone does not identify the fitted ignition system.
Older mechanical barrels, different steering lock assemblies and newer electronic or keyless arrangements require different approaches. Tell us the model and year and whether the van uses an inserted key or a start button before booking.
Why working-van keys can contribute to wear
Tradespeople often carry van keys in pockets, tool bags and dusty working environments. Dirt, dust and grit can collect on a blade and may be transferred into the ignition barrel during everyday use.
Over time, contamination combined with repeated use and mechanical wear may contribute to stiff operation or sticking wafers. This is one possible contributor, not a diagnosis: many Transit ignition faults involve worn parts, a damaged key or another mechanism rather than dirt.
Avoid scraping, forcing or adding unsuitable lubricant. A key that is progressively harder to insert or turn is worth assessing before the blade breaks inside the barrel.
Worn blades, wafers and damaged components
A rounded or worn key blade may no longer position the internal wafers correctly. Wafers and barrel components also wear, and a damaged barrel can stick even when a better key is available. Comparing a sound spare can help, but do not force it if resistance remains.
A broken blade, damaged housing or steering lock fault needs its own assessment. Replacing a remote shell will not restore worn mechanical cuts, and cutting another copy of a badly worn blade may carry the wear into the new key.
When the key turns but the van does not respond
If the key rotates yet the dashboard or starter does not respond as expected, the electrical ignition switch may be involved. The battery, wiring, starter and immobiliser can also cause a no-start condition.
Describe the dashboard lights, any warning messages and whether the engine cranks. A mechanical repair should not be offered as a universal answer to an electrical problem.
Repair decisions for a working van
Repair may be appropriate where the barrel can be restored and the surrounding assembly is sound. Replacement is considered when components are too worn or damaged, or the housing or switch is the actual fault. Parts and compatibility depend on the exact van.
Keeping the original key and whether any programming is needed are discussed after inspection. Neither is promised for every Transit. Explain where the van is parked, including safe access at a yard, job site or residential street in Portsmouth.

Ignition repair questions
+Is dust always the cause of a Transit ignition sticking?
No. Dust and grit may contribute, particularly with working-van keys, but blade wear, worn wafers, damaged parts and steering lock faults can also cause sticking. Inspection identifies the likely cause.
+Do Transit Custom and Transit Connect use the same ignition?
Not necessarily. Models and generations differ in their barrels, housings, switches and electronic arrangements. The registration and year are needed to check the system and support.
+Should I have a new blade checked as well as the barrel?
Yes. A worn blade can affect operation, while copying a worn key is not always the right answer. Both the key and ignition should be assessed so a repair is not based on the wrong component.
+Should I force a key that will not turn?
No. Stop applying pressure and avoid tools or improvised lubricants. Forcing the key can break the blade or damage the barrel. Tell us whether the steering wheel is locked and whether a spare key behaves differently.
+Will a replacement ignition need key programming?
Not necessarily. Mechanical work and immobiliser programming are separate jobs. What is needed depends on the vehicle, the replacement components and whether the original transponder or key can be retained.
+Can you keep my existing key?
Sometimes a suitable barrel can be repaired or configured to an existing sound key, but that is not possible on every vehicle or with every replacement. Compatibility is assessed before agreeing the work.
